Discipline Has to Hold the Line

Discipline Has to Hold the Line

I was recently supported by TrainingPeaks with a Pro Account, which is a huge help as I continue building toward Chattanooga. Big shoutout and thank you to the TrainingPeaks team for supporting this mission.

I also programmed the next several months of training leading into race day.

And I'm not going to lie — the magnitude of it is intimidating.

The volume. The hours. The swimming, biking, running, strength work, recovery, nutrition, and everything else that has to happen between now and that finish line. Looking at the entire thing at once is enough to freak me out a little.

But I'm committed to seeing it through.

And maybe that's the lesson.

What's stopping you from doing what needs to be done?

Sometimes we look too far ahead. We see everything that has to happen before we reach the finish line, and the sheer size of the task starts defeating us before we've even begun.

So when it starts feeling overwhelming, I narrow the focus.

One day at a time.

One workout at a time.

One stroke. One pedal. One stride at a time.

Motivation is great when it shows up. But motivation is unreliable. There will be mornings when you're tired. Days when you don't feel ready. Moments when that voice starts telling you:

It's too much.

I'm too tired.

I'm too busy.

I'm too… whatever.

That's when discipline has to hold the line.

You already know what needs to be done. Don't psych yourself out by trying to conquer the entire mountain today.

Make the plan.

Set the goals.

Do today's work.

Then get up tomorrow and do it again.

Because the finish line isn't reached in one giant effort. It's reached through thousands of small decisions to keep moving forward.
