The Number to Beat: 2:04

- Discipline
- Swim
- Swim Pace
- 2:04 /100 yd
This morning I got in the water and did something I hadn't actually done yet: I timed myself.
100 yards, freestyle, all-out effort. No stroke count games, no pretending. Just how fast can I actually go right now.
2:04.
Swimming is the newest of the three disciplines for me, and it shows. There's no established technique to fall back on, no years of muscle memory doing the work. Right now it's mostly effort and oxygen debt standing in for skill.
And that's fine. That's the point of a baseline — it's not a verdict, it's a starting line.
The number I'm chasing is 1:22–1:25.
That's not a wild guess. It's the range that actually matters for the swim leg of a 70.3, and it's a long way from where I am this morning. Most of the gap between 2:04 and 1:22 isn't going to come from trying harder. It's going to come from getting the technique right — catch, rotation, breathing, not fighting the water so much of the time.
So now there's a number on the board. Something concrete to measure the work against instead of just a feeling of "getting better."
Next time I test it, I'll know if the work actually moved the needle.
For now: 2:04 is the number to beat.
